How Cairo Ranks as the Most Polluted City in the World

After being ranked among the most polluted cities in the world for the past few years, Cairo has scored the first place as the filthiest city on this planet by a recent study done by the UK based energy firm Eco Expert

The study was published at Forbes as an article titled “The Ten Most Polluted Cities on Earth”, the study compares different levels of pollution in 48 cities across 24 countries, the study measured the levels of pollution regarding aggregating air, noise and light pollution

Measuring these levels of pollution, Cairo scored first in total followed by Delhi, Beijing, Moscow, Istanbul, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Buenos Aires, Paris and Los Angeles

Here is a breakdown of Cairo scores in the pollution level

Air Pollution

Cairo has the 2nd highest levels of PM10 in the world – at 284 ug/m3 on average -; which is 14.2 times over the safe limit. That means the Capital residents breathe in on an average day in air plagued with PM2.5, unfortunately, that’s 11.7 times more dangerous than the recommended safe level by WHO

Light Pollution

Cairo is the third brightest city in the world right after Moscow and Chicago. According to Wikipedia, light pollution is the presence of anthropogenic light in the night environment. It is exacerbated by excessive, misdirected or obtrusive uses of light,’ it is a major side effect of urbanization. Light pollution can cause headaches, stress, fatigue, anxiety and decrease in sexual function; never mind the horrible effects on the eco system as well

Noise Pollution

It is no surprise that Cairo is the third nosiest city behind Guangzhou and Delhi.  The level of noise reaches an average of 85 decibels every day, which basically equals spending a full day in a factory

The study published in the Forbes article was posted by the Eco Expert website back in July of this year; needless to mention that Cairo was ranked among the most polluted cities in the world few times in recent years. Just a month before this research was posted, the WHO announced that Cairo is the second largest polluted city in the world

In 2017, the UN Environment Program stated in a report that 40,000 people across Egypt all died from pollution; according to the report, the absence of trees in the Egyptian capital is a major factor in air pollution

March 2018, there was a report by the World Hearing Index found Cairo to be almost the world’s noisiest city – second only to Guangzhou, China, and followed by Paris, Beijing, and Delhi

The ministry of Environment refused the latest study whatsoever claiming that there are a number of flaws in the methodology used and hence, the results
