The Story Behind Selma Köhn

What is the Story Behind Selma Köhn?

In a nutshell: It is the pursuit of my identity in being the person I am, regardless of my cultural, religious and national background. The core of my story is to balance my mix of being German and having an Egyptian mother, of being modern and practicing Islam and of being practical yet embracing and expressing my emotions. I think I have found that balance. From the outside it may seem ambivalent but from the inside it makes total sense.

When did you decide to become a therapist and why?

It was at a point in my life where I knew I had to change profoundly. The pain of staying where I used to be was bigger than the change I let myself dive into. And along with that, came the urge to help other people to overcome their inner obstacles and step into their full potential. I believe that when you heal one by one, the collective is healed as we co-create the world we live in. And looking at the world right now it is obvious that each one of us needs to change first to achieve what we all truly desire: happiness and peace.

You call your approach “Blended Therapy”….  what are the different therapeutic/healing methods and techniques that you use?

I‘m specialized in Hypnotherapy, a method called Rapid Transformational Therapy, and Coaching, especially for Kids & Teens. If needed, I also support the transformational process of my clients with some energy psychology methods like Primoridal Energy Activation & Transcendence (PEAT), integrated Eye Reprocessing Technique (iERT) or Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) which support removing blocks from the subconscious mind.

Let’s learn more about some of those methods… what is the Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT)? When is it used?

This is developed by Marisa Peer, several times voted as best therapist in the UK, who I had the pleasure of being personally trained by. RTT is basically hypnotherapy that includes techniques of Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and The Work. It is best used when you want to get to the root of your problem quickly and change the limiting beliefs that lie behind solving your problem like phobia, chronic pain, depression, fear or low confidence.

How about Mental Coaching.. what is it and who is it for?

This is how I call my coaching style. I aim to help my clients in getting where they would like to be as fast as possible. I use different techniques that I tailor according to the need of each person.

The alternative medicine field in Egypt is quite new… do you see a change in how it has been perceived at the beginning vs. now?

Oh, absolutely!  And it is very exciting to not only see that but also to shape it. People increasingly open up to the concept of holistic healing, actually globally, and are more and more aware of turning to their inside. This leads to the fact that conventional medicine opened up to the idea of working together with alternative therapists. I myself work very closely with a psychologist and a full-fledged clinic in Cairo.

Moreover, I would say that the main difference or let’s say, the progress, is the shift of focus. Instead of running away from themselves or pointing fingers at others, people are starting to face their own flaws and choose to actually work on them. This is incredibly amazing to witness, especially here in Egypt.

What do you aim to achieve through your career?

My aim is to spread awareness on the importance of working on yourself and to help as many people as I can, either through my sessions, workshops, articles or TV appearances.
